Investment doesn’t need to be difficult.  The rich seem to understand the basics of investing that keep them getting richer.  Here are some tips to follow for making wise investments.

• Stocks are the top performers when it comes to long term investing.  Choose wisely and you could make a fortune.  Know when to buy, when to sell and when to sit tight. 
• Risky investments will give you a better return on your money.  But they are risky so understand what you have to lose before taking big chances.  The more money you have the riskier you can be with some of it.
• Bonds are safer than stocks any day of the week.  They are, however, a long-term investment.  Remember that bonds can take a beating due to inflation so beware.
• Diversify.  Create a portfolio that contains different types of investment products.  That way if one takes a hit you don’t lose everything.  You’ve heard the old saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.  Apply that to investments.
• Don’t invest more than you can afford.  Make sure that you still have enough savings in case you need money quickly.  As your assets increase you can increase your investments.
• Trust your instincts.  Learn to understand stocks, then make judgment calls based on an educated guess.  In other words, don’t pick stocks just on name alone.  Look into the past performance and future potential first. 
• Be careful who you listen to.  There are lots of people out there who are willing to give investment advice. Unfortunately, many of them don’t know what they’re talking about.  Look for credentials and background and avoid investments based on talk around the water cooler.
• A pig in a poke usually ends up getting cooked.  Avoid crazy or off the wall stocks or investment ideas. If they sound too good to be true they usually are.  Many people have gotten burned because they acted on foolish investment opportunities.
• Play the real estate game.  Most wealthy people have at least some real estate investments.  Try purchasing real estate just for profit.  It almost always increases in value.  Know when to sell for the best return on your investment.  Then invest in some property again.  Think – Monopoly game.
• Don’t gamble your money away.  Investment ideas that are too risky may be a poor choice, especially for those who aren’t wealthy.  Stick to safer choices and build a steady increase.
• Keep your eyes and ears open.  Smart investors listen to what the new up and coming trend is and can get in on the bottom floor.  Again, be smart by understanding the potential risk involved.  Those who invested in IBM or Microsoft at the beginning are millionaires today.
• Hire a financial planner.  The cost is not too high and can be well worth it.  Let them help you make sure you have all your bases covered such as 401K or other retirement funds and that you can meet all your upcoming financial obligations.
